Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Field
Sir Joseph Hood, 1st Baronet (1863-1931), was raised in Leicestershire, where he studied law and was moved to Liverpool where he became a solicitor in 1890.
Having served on the Board of Trade and Ministry of Information during World War I, Hood became a Coalition Conservative member of parliament for Wimbledon in 1918. He was awarded the honour of baronet of Wimbledon in 1922, two years before retiring from the Commons.
Hood was held in the highest regard in the Wimbledon district, having donated recreation grounds, playing fields, and woodland to the Borough of Wimbledon.
As a result of his service Hood was elected as Mayor of Wimbledon in 1930, a position he held until he passed away in 1931. Following his death the playing fields and woodland were named in his honour.
In more recent years, the Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Field has won the UK’s prestigious Green Flag Award for its high standards (from 2007 to 2012) and has been home to the Hawks since 2009.
